About Marcasite:

"Marcasite" is the term for polished, faceted pyrite (fool's gold) used as a gem.  Marcasite jewelry was quite popular during the Victorian era, and it is not uncommon for Art Nouveau-style pieces to implement the stone.  Despite its metallic appearance, pyrite is stone and not metal.  It is important to clean marcasite jewelry with care as stones are often epoxied in and can be scrubbed loose.  Avoid chemical jewelry cleaners to best preserve any potential epoxy.
